Big three calculator: Sun, Moon and rising sign

Your Sun sign is only one third of the picture. Enter your birth date, time and city to find your Moon sign and your rising sign too. It takes a few seconds and stays on your device.

Born elsewhere? Pick the listed city closest to you in the same time zone; the rising sign may shift if you were born far away.

What the big three mean

Your Sun sign is where the Sun was on your birthday, the sign most people know. It describes your core identity and what energizes you. Your Moon sign is where the Moon was: your emotional nature, what you need to feel safe, and how you react when no one is watching. Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It colors your first impressions, your style and the way you approach anything new.

That is why two people with the same Sun sign can feel so different: a Leo with a Cancer Moon and Virgo rising comes across very differently from a Leo with an Aries Moon and Sagittarius rising. The big three won’t replace a full birth chart, which includes the planets and houses too, but it’s the most useful place to start.

How we calculate it

The calculator converts your local birth time to Universal Time using your browser’s time zone database (which includes historical daylight saving rules), then computes the positions of the Sun and the Moon and the degree of the zodiac rising over your birthplace. Nothing you enter is sent to our server. Astrology is a symbolic tradition, not a science, so read your big three as a mirror for reflection.

Next, read your sign profiles, check your daily horoscope or see how your sign matches someone else’s in compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

What is my big three in astrology?

Your Sun sign (your core identity), your Moon sign (your emotional nature) and your rising sign, or ascendant (how you come across and approach new situations).

Why do I need my birth time?

The rising sign changes about every two hours as the Earth turns, so it depends on the exact time and place of birth. The Moon also moves about one sign every two and a half days.

I don’t know my birth time. What can I do?

Check your birth certificate or ask a family member. Without it, your Sun sign is reliable, your Moon sign is usually right, and the rising sign can’t be calculated.

How accurate is this calculator?

It uses a simplified astronomical model: the Sun and the rising sign are accurate to about a degree, the Moon to about half a degree. Near the border of a sign we tell you, because a few minutes of birth time can change the result.
