Tarot card meanings

A tarot deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana in four suits. Choose a card to read what it means upright and reversed, in love, work and money, and whether it leans toward yes or no.

How to read the cards

The Major Arcana describe turning points: big lessons, new chapters and the themes that shape a whole season of life. The Minor Arcana describe everyday situations. Each suit has its own element and area of life: Wands are fire and action, Cups are water and feelings, Swords are air and thoughts, and Pentacles are earth, money and the body.

Within each suit, the numbered cards from Ace to Ten tell a small story from a first spark to completion, and the four court cards (Page, Knight, Queen and King) show different ways of handling that suit’s energy. A reversed card doesn’t mean the opposite; it usually means the energy is blocked, delayed or turned inward.

Frequently asked questions

How many tarot cards are there?

A standard deck has 78: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana in four suits — Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Every one of them is listed on this page.

What does it mean when a card is reversed?

Upright, a card is read in its direct sense. Reversed, the same energy is read as blocked, delayed or turned inward. Some readers ignore reversals entirely, and that is a legitimate way to work.

Does a card mean something different in love and at work?

Yes. Each card page gives its reading for love, work and money separately, because the same theme plays out differently depending on where you meet it.

Is a card meaning a prediction?

No. A card names a theme worth noticing. It does not tell you what will happen in your love life, your money or your health, and it cannot speak for another person.
