What are tarot birth cards?
Birth cards come from tarot author Mary K. Greer, who described them in Who Are You in the Tarot? (originally Tarot Constellations). The idea is simple: your date of birth adds up to a number that points to one or two cards of the Major Arcana, the 22 cards that tell the story of the Fool’s journey. Unlike a daily draw, your birth cards never change. Many readers see them as a lifelong theme: the strengths you were born with and the lessons you keep returning to.
How the calculation works
Add your birth month, day and the full year as ordinary numbers. For January 18, 2010 that is 1 + 18 + 2010 = 2029. Then add the digits of the total (2 + 0 + 2 + 9 = 13) and keep going while the number is above 22. A two-digit result and the card of its digit sum form your pair: 13 gives Death, your personality card, and The Emperor, your soul card (1 + 3 = 4). A total of 19 gives three cards, The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician, and 22 is The Fool paired with The Emperor.
Many birth dates, though, add up to a number between 23 and 36 that reduces straight to a single digit. Then one card is both your personality and your soul card, a doubled theme. In all there are 22 possible results: 13 pairs and nine single cards, which is why so many people share birth cards and why Greer called each family of cards with the same root number a “constellation.” Your tarot card of the year uses the same arithmetic with the current year, and your life path number is its numerology cousin.
How to work with your birth cards
Look at the images of your cards side by side. The personality card often shows the path you walk in the world and the challenges that shape you; the soul card the inner gift you can always come back to. Keep them on your altar or desk for a week, journal about the moments they describe, or pull them deliberately when you need a reminder of who you are. As always, tarot is a mirror for reflection, not a fixed fate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my tarot birth card?
Add your birth month, day and full year as numbers, for example 7 + 14 + 1982 = 2003. Add the digits (2 + 0 + 0 + 3 = 5) until you reach 22 or less. A two-digit result and the sum of its digits are your pair of birth cards; 22 stands for The Fool.
Why do I get two birth cards?
In Mary K. Greer’s system a two-digit number and its digit sum belong to the same “constellation” of cards. The higher card, the personality card, describes the path you walk outwardly; the lower one, the soul card, the core gift you carry.
What if my total is a single digit?
Then one card is both your personality card and your soul card. It is a common result: many birth dates add up to a number above 22 that reduces straight to a single digit.
