What is a life path number?
In Western numerology, which grew out of Pythagorean number symbolism and was popularized in the twentieth century, your life path number is the most important number in your chart. It is calculated from your full date of birth and is said to describe your natural strengths, your challenges and the themes you keep meeting in life. There are nine basic numbers and three “master numbers”, 11, 22 and 33, which are not reduced further.
How to calculate it by hand
Reduce the month, the day and the year to single digits separately, keeping 11, 22 and 33, then add the three results and reduce again. Example: November 29, 1987. Month: 11 (a master number, kept). Day: 2 + 9 = 11 (kept). Year: 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25 → 7. Total: 11 + 11 + 7 = 29 → 11. So this birthday has life path 11. Different numerology books use slightly different methods, so you may see a different result elsewhere; we use the most common one.
How to use your number
Read your number as a mirror, not a verdict. Notice which strengths feel true and which challenges ring a bell, and pick one small thing to work on. Numerology pairs well with other reflective tools: see your zodiac sign or keep seeing a number like 444? Look it up in angel numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How is the life path number calculated?
Reduce the month, the day and the year of your birth to single digits (keeping 11, 22 and 33), then add them and reduce again. For example, July 14, 1990: 7 + 5 (1+4) + 1 (1+9+9+0 = 19 → 10 → 1) = 13 → 4.
What are master numbers?
11, 22 and 33 are not reduced further in numerology. They are seen as intensified versions of 2, 4 and 6, with bigger potential and bigger challenges.
Is numerology scientific?
No. Numerology is a symbolic tradition, not a science. Read your number as a mirror for reflection, not as a fixed description of who you are.
