When a Card Makes No Sense: Six Things to Try

Every reader hits it: you draw a card about a job decision and get the Seven of Cups, or a card about grief and get the Three of Pentacles. Before you decide the deck is broken, try these six things in order.

Check the position before the card

A card means something different depending on where it sits. The same Five of Swords as 'what you bring' and as 'what is coming' is two different readings. Before you interpret, say out loud which position the card occupies.

If you are not using positions, that is often the problem: a card with no assigned role has nothing to be right or wrong about.

Read it as the situation, not the answer

Cards describe the weather, not the decision. The Seven of Cups about a job is not 'you will be confused about the job', it may be 'the situation contains seven options and none of them is the real one yet'. That is a description you can use.

Ask what the card is describing about the situation you are already in, rather than what it is advising you to do about it.

Look at the image before the meaning

Cover the book. What is happening in the picture? Who is looking where, what is being held, what is missing? A card that makes no sense as a keyword often makes perfect sense as a picture.

This is also the fastest way to check whether you are reading the card or reading your own expectation of what the card should say.

Ask whether it is about someone else

Some cards land on a person in the situation rather than on you. If the card suddenly fits a colleague or a family member, that is a legitimate reading — just say so instead of forcing it onto yourself.

The trap is inventing a person to fill a card you do not like. If nobody fits immediately, move on.

Check the deck, then yourself

Once in a while the problem is physical: a card stuck to another, a missing card, the same card appearing twice. Count the deck if something feels off.

More often the problem is you: you are tired, you already know the answer you want, or you asked two questions at once. Drawing again is allowed, but only after you notice which of those it is.

Let it be early

Some cards are simply ahead of their explanation, and a reading that arrives three days later has not failed. Write the card down and leave it. If it becomes clear later, that is a note worth keeping; if it never does, you lost nothing.

Not every card has to resolve on the day you draw it, and forcing a meaning is how people learn to distrust their own readings.

Try it now

Frequently asked questions

Should I draw another card to clarify?

Only after you have tried the six steps. A clarifier drawn too early usually repeats the confusion in a louder voice.

What if the same card keeps appearing?

Keep a note of the dates. A repeating card is usually a theme you are avoiding rather than a message about a specific event.

Does this mean I am bad at tarot?

No. Every reader has cards they cannot read quickly, often for years. The skill is in knowing what to try, not in never being stuck.
